The issue of “Food Deserts” has become a recognized problem. The USDA has produced a map that outlines areas that they define as food deserts. The USDA did this so that researches could have access to data from a reliable source; the information on their website is some of the most recent in the nation. It is important to understand what data the USDA is using in the map. There is a link to download some of the info which will help to clarify some of the terms they use. Overall I think that this tool is helpful; it puts in perspective the areas around us that are recognized as food deserts. However, I think that there are still areas that could qualify as food deserts that are not included, or at least some of their areas are on the conservative side. It is not a conclusive data tool, but it helps give some idea to us as to what is going on. I would strongly recommend that readers use this information to locate an area that they can visit. Find a food desert near you and spend a bit of time in the area, see what kind of food is available to the residents there. Spend some time checking out the map at least and comparing it with another map of the area online and see what kind of businesses are near it.
The title says all about this article. More then half of the tuna fish we eat is NOT even tuna. About 80 percent of fish samples labeled “white tuna” were actually escolar, a fish that can cause prolonged, uncontrollable, oily anal leakage. In grocery stores 18 percent of fish is mislabeled. In restaurants 38 percent of tuna is mislabeled and in sushi venues is the highest at 74 percent is mislabeled. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/02/59-of-the-tuna-americans-eat-is-not-tuna/273410/
A article in Canada was written about Genetically Modified Food and how the genes in the hormones are able to go through our digestive tracts and after go to our bloodstream. Blood samples were taking from 30 healthy pregnant women and 39 non-pregnant women. For the 30 women pregnant they took blood samples from the umbilical cord and were tested for two different pesticides that are used in GMOs crops. The two pesticides they tested were glyphosate (sold as Roundup) and gluphosinate ammonium (sold as Liberty and used on “Liberty Link” genetically modified soy, corn, and canola). Eating this food can cause many different problems such as Kidney failures and liver problems are just the very few of them. If your pregnant or thinking to become pregnant its time to look what you eat. http://www.rodale.com/genetically-modified-food-0
The article, “Nearly Half of All U.S. Farms Now Have Superweeds”, was really interesting because it shows that weeds are no longer resistant to the glyphosate that was created by Monsanto. This herbicide resistant was made to kill weeds but not prevent any of Monsanto’s genetically modified crops from growing and producing food. The problem of herbicide resistant weeds has gotten much worse since 2010. Because of these “superweeds”, Monsanto is now creating another type of seed that will resist other herbicides that will be used to kill weeds.
There is a study that was published recently concerning mislabeled seafood. In “Seafood Fraud Study By Oceana Reveals Widespread Mislabeling Nationwide”, a group called Oceana created this study to find out if the different types of fish sold in restaurants and grocery stores are really what the labels claim them to be. Oceana tested the DNA from different fish species in twenty-one states in the United States and found mislabeled fish everywhere they went. The article shows their results and I can’t believe that people would be dishonest about the fish they are selling. It makes me wonder why they would do such a thing. Are they trying to hide something from consumers?
This video is about freeganism which is also known as “dumpster diving”. It’s focused on a group of people who are finding food in garbage bags that are still good to eat. It shows a little bit of what they do during their scavenger hunt. The video also has opinions from people who are participating in the hunt, people who are observing the freegans, and employees of the companies that throw away the food. Unfortunately, they only have a few people talk but it is still very interesting to hear from the different sides of the whole situation.
This article is about food waste and how extreme it has become. In this text it also talks about the different reasons why food waste is so high in the world today and the struggles the future may hold if this waste continues.
Our world is so consumed with mass production. People want large quantities of food and they want them now. Farmers have begun using chemicals to produce more of the crops they are trying to sell. These chemicals are added to our soon to be food and they are toxic. This article is written to inform us that Genetically Modified foods are not good for us; and can be deadly.
Michael Pollan has “beef” with the way we grow “beef”. This interview is very interesting in the way that Pollan is interviewed and it was fun hearing directly from his mouth on what his opinions and thought on our beef industry here in America.
